Maytree

Empathy is probably the single most effective method of caring for a suicidal individual. Maytree provides sanctuary for the suicidal where trained individuals have succeeded in turning many hundreds of individuals from wanting to die to wanting to live. Only one such place exists in the whole country and that is in North London. JWSMF is helping to establish other Maytrees in other parts of the UK.

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM)

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) needed an office and to employ some staff to help expand their hard hitting and effective campaign which is targeted towards young men. They had been offered a grant of £30,000 on a matched funding basis by another charitable foundation. The grant of £30,000 made by JWSMF therefore generated £60,000 of help for CALM. We are now in further discussions with a view to sponsoring their nationwide advertising campaign aimed particularly at young men to raise awareness of the problem and help prevent suicide.

Research Into Suicide with SANE

Funding research in partnership with the mental health charity SANE to help identify those individuals who are most at risk of suicide. Suicide is notoriously difficult to predict and therefore prevention remains a considerable challenge. Certain signals shown by a suicidal person are already known and this research will uncover others. Recognizing those at greatest risk is something the public should be made aware of as much as the health professionals and this research will be a positive step in this direction.

Training in Suicide Prevention

Providing funding for training workshops given by leading experts in the field of suicide prevention to counselors and therapists to help spread the latest and most effective methods of suicide prevention and risk assessment.

The Catalyst Trust

The most ‘at risk’ group of suicide are those who come from the most deprived parts of our urban communities. The Catalyst Trust trains volunteers as mentors and coaches to help young persons living in depressing and difficult environments. They are encouraged to develop their interests and find more purpose in their lives. The results are impressive and provide great benefits not only to those individuals but to the communities in which they live. JWSMF is helping the Catalyst Trust to obtain the necessary accreditation for the work they are doing which will thereby enable them to secure funding from large corporations and charitable foundations.
